Chapter 15 -- Krystal
Tuesday, September 24, 2013
I sat in my Cultural Anthropology class — one which normally held my interest — and thought about everything I needed to do the minute class was over. The plan was to meet at the Sons' clubhouse at two p.m. and ride for about three-and-a-half hours before stopping for the night just over the state line in Raton, New Mexico. On Wednesday, we'd ride to Juarez, Mexico, and meet one of Joker's contacts who'd take us to a town called Nuevo Casas Grandes. Luke had told me that the ride from Juarez to Nuevo Casas Grandes could be dangerous, and the escort was primarily to ensure that none of the rampant drug cartel violence spilled over into our route. Apparently kidnappings, murder, and human trafficking were all just part of an ordinary day in that area.
I'd considered not going.
Luke had talked me into it, though. I was a little flattered, because one of the reasons he wanted me there with him was to have someone to bounce his ideas off of — another person to help figure out the Savage Sons' secrets that had been left behind, south of the border. I'd have agreed to go just because he needed me, but Luke had gone a step further, promising me that we'd find a little town somewhere along the way home and spend a few days holed up, lounging in the Mexican sunshine and making love. I couldn't turn him down.
My daydream about Luke's sun-kissed body was disrupted by the sound of students shuffling their books into backpacks. I'd completely zoned out and hadn't realized that the lecture had ended. I dropped my homework on the instructor's desk as I hurried out of the classroom.
I stopped at the drugstore to pick up extra sunscreen for the ride and for lounging in the sun, and I picked up the leather jacket that Luke had ordered for me. I was surprised that he'd already had the patches sewed on it, and I was also surprised that I didn't feel like I'd expected I would when I finally got my old lady's jacket. I'd pictured myself feeling strong and looking down on all the pitiful hang-around sluts just being used as a hole to fuck. What I found was that I was happy to be with a man I loved, and who I knew loved me, and I felt nothing but pity for the girls who might never realize that they deserved better than being passed around the clubhouse. I didn't want my conscience to interfere with my enjoyment of the upcoming ride, though, so I pushed the thoughts down and headed home to meet Luke.
"I took all of your underwear out of your bag. You're not gonna need it." Luke didn't even look up from the bag he was packing as I walked into our bedroom. His sense of humor was one of the things I loved most about him.
"Like hell I'm making a long ride with nothing between me and my jeans.
